Why not Shoukaku? Because all Shoukaku-related dates this year had already passed, except 12th December (when Shoukaku was laid down in 1937), which is way too late compared with the devs' announcement of "around this summer".
Late October seems more likely imho, since that's also when the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands was fought.

I suggest Battle of Leyte Gulf because the devs had stated that their K2 will be based on the assumption that they won both Battle of Philippines Sea and Battle of Leyte Gulf. There doesn't seem to have much relationship between Santa Cruz and the K2 from what we know.
I understand your point, but from what you said, 7 kai Ni's out of 48 had something to do with their original ship. But the fact that Capitals are more historical related is nice to know.
We just can't demand that everything be introduced on it's corresponding historical date. For this it's only natural that devs let the larger ships be historical and work the smaller ones around them.
Still, there are some smaller ships K2ed on historical dates, like Choukai (laid down 26th March, 1928, recevied K2 on 27th March, 2015) and Shigure (23rd October, Surigao Strait). They are relatively rare cases on smaller ships, but not on capital (especially IJN) ships. The reason might be that smaller ships receive K2 for all kinds of reasons (2nd anniversary, anime debut celebration, etc.), but almost all capital ships' K2 have historical references.
BTW, Abukuma's K2 was introduced on 17th July, 4 days later than her actual historical remodel (completed 13th July, 1944), given the fact that there were no update one week earlier, this is the nearest update to her historical reference.
Given that the 5th Carrier Division are capital ships AND that their K2 is confirmed to have historical reference, I think it is quite safe to assume that they will use one of those historical dates.

Off to the CG Gallery, you go!
^ Yes, same with Jintsuu (should be Kai Ni), other ships can be non-kai.

No more Akashi's Bikini+Apron self to greet you I guess.

According to a post in animesuki citing from the latest Comptiq, "Shoukaku-class 1st ship "if" remodel is planned for this month at the earliest." If so, I guess you might have actually hit the jackpot, of sorts =)

"At the earliest", better not set my hope too high
